A fumigant can be defined as a chemical that will exist as a lethal gas at ambient temperatures and pressures. The quality of the commodity may be affected by fumigant treatment in several ways. Residues of unchanged fumigant may remain in the commodity. The commodity, substrate, or structural space to be fumigated is sealed prior to fumigant introduction to sufficiently confine the fumigant.
